With the holidays here, celebrating with loved ones is one of the things everyone is expecting to do. Sometimes is a little harder though. You might be overseas or maybe part of your family is spread around the world. Like in my case. I’m half Peruvian-half Chilean. Which doesn’t means I have family and friends in only those countries. Some are in Europe, others in Australia and the US. As you can guess, being in one place with everyone is not possible. So, how can we connect with loved ones from afar during the holidays?
In my 24 years, I’ve have seen how easier connecting with family and friends on specials days is getting. I remember my mom buying telephone cards to call my grandparents, cousins, and friends. Which is super weird! And so old school. Right now, there are many ways to communicate when you are overseas. And not only by phone! How To Connect With Loved Ones From Afar During The Holidays?
1. Send a Postcard or a small gift
We all know that shipping rates can be a little too much sometimes. Especially if you are sending something from the other side of the world. So keep it small and light. That’s the key at the time of sending something. Or contact a local business to send the present. That’s another option too.
Since I started dating my boyfriend back in 2015. One of the biggest struggles we have to face is not being together on any special days. Long-distance relationships can suck during the holidays. So one of the solutions, or ways I thought to be present is sending him a postcard.
So far, I have used two companies. But my favorite is Ink Cards. I like the quality of the cards and the designs they offer. I normally wait until they have sales (closer to Christmas). But if you prefer not to wait, you can send cards from $1.99

2. Use ornaments that your family gave you
It can either be for your tree or to decorate your home. But having that object near you is a great way to have your family close to you, even if you are living miles away. In a way, is like having the presence of that person there.
My grandma gave us a super cute nativity to decorate our home. It’s always special to look at it because we know the gift came with the best wishes. And that is just an example! There are many other ideas.
3. Video chat or call during the day
We always try to do it during the morning. The holidays come with many preparations and between cooking dinner and making the house look perfect for the night, everyone is always super busy doing something!
Either way, a video chat session is always good for feeling more festive and closer to your loved ones. It can also bring good memories and, even if you don’t want, it can make you feel a little sad. I mean, who doesn’t want to spend those days in the company of your family or friends? It’s totally normal!
During the months I was studying abroad in New Jersey I always made time for video chatting with my family, especially with my mom. I wanted to make sure that the way I was cooking the food was exactly like she makes it. It was fun and we laughed a lot. It made me miss her a lot, but at the same time, I felt very happy to have the opportunity to talk with her like we were in the same place and not in different countries.A video chat session is always good for feeling more festive and closer to your loved ones Click To Tweet
4. Add some family traditions in your holidays
Do you have a family recipe you love? A special way to decorate your home for the holidays? Adding your family traditions is the perfect way to connect with loved ones from afar during the holidays! I know for sure I will be making my grandma’s turkey recipe and my mom’s salads. They are seriously the best!
Nothing like keeping traditions to make you feel more at home! Others might not understand why you do it or why you like foods a certain way. But the important thing is feeling close to your family and friends.
5. Send photos during the day
To your friends and family, send photos showing how is your day going and how you are preparing for the festivities. They will do the same and both parts will have fun doing it.
It will make you want to be with them, but even if you can’t, it will make you feel like they are thinking about you. Making you feel that, somehow, you are part of the celebrations. What do you do to feel closer to your family during the holidays when you live far away? Click To Tweet
